The Folklore Museum of Kaloxylos in Naxos is an exceptional museum located in the Cyclades, and it currently operates under the auspices of UNESCO. Housed within the family home of Florios Chorianopoulos, this museum boasts an extensive collection of objects that provide insights into the daily lives of the island's inhabitants.
Visitors to the museum can explore a wide range of exhibits, including everyday utensils, agricultural tools, stamp and banknote collections, and items from Chorianopoulos' school days. What sets this museum apart is its faithful recreations of shops from bygone eras, creating an immersive experience that transports visitors back in time.
Among the recreated shops, visitors will find a fully stocked grocery store from 1935, the only rope shop in Naxos, a carpenter's workshop, tools from a candlestick maker dating back to 1830, and various implements from traditional occupations such as beekeeping, baking, sewing, and shoemaking. The museum also showcases vintage radios, cameras, military uniforms, gramophones, exquisite furniture, and shadow theatre figures.
Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Kaloxylos and witness the meticulous recreations of traditional shops that provide a vivid window into the past.
